When asked in a Reddit thread why not make an original or multiplayer spinoff of the Tomb Raider reboot like the two Legend remakes, Crystal Dynamics executive producer Stephen Franks said that the company "didn't want that, we don't want to do a multiplayer-only", and went on to state they

Development of the reboot began in late 2009, while the company were in the midst of writing the script for the sequel to 2008's Tomb Raider; the story for Legend was not written until early 2012 after Crystal Dynamics began developing the reboot.[45] By this point, one of the most successful IPs in video game history, the reboot was reportedly a "desperate attempt" by Square Enix to find a reason to keep a major franchise alive.[46]
Mick Gordon, who was previously a game designer at Square Enix and now serves as executive producer at Crystal Dynamics, claims in a 2008 magazine interview that the reboot is significantly different from previous entries in the franchise.[47] According to Gordon, the game takes place in the 1930s, instead of in the 1700s like its predecessors, which Gordon argues was the reason the games received a mixed critical and sales response. He also states that the game will feature some sequences that feature some of the trademarks of the Tomb Raider franchise, such as, run-and-shoot, climbing, and other puzzles. The plot will begin with Lara leaving the crumbling ruins of Rannoch and heading to an island called Yamatai. Gordon adds that the island is used as a metaphor for the human condition. According to Gordon, "Yamatai represents the poverty and filth that we are all born into and the only way to get out of it is by yourself, to make it on your own."[48] d2c66b5586
