In 1918, Professor Major Howard Carter succeeded Sir Evelyn Harrison as Director of the Egyptian Department. Carter gave his loyalty to his professor, Edwin Smith, and they set out, for the first time, to remove the cartouches from the staff of the Museum. This was followed by the compilation of a catalogue of the papyrus collection and the opening of the Griffith Institute Archive. In 1920, the popular 'Seven Wonders of the World' was excavated from the desert floor at Luxor and here the initial interest in the possibility of relating the new finds to the papyri collection was born. It was realised that the current and previous holdings of the collection were incomplete and that to understand the present needs a search was to be made for the original material. It is clear that the Museum never ceased to be in search of its Egyptological heritage, even if the sporadic efforts of the Curators were only a part of this continual quest.
In 1922 the famous 'Arch of Merneptah' was unearthed. This was followed by the discovery of other artifacts of great interest such as the famous 'Door of Nectanebo' and other pieces of important architecture. During these years the Museum also made its first efforts to make these discoveries known to the general public. The Museum's bibliography was enlarged. More staff were employed and the Museum was made more accessible to the public. During the 1920s, the Museum had to fight hard to keep its reputation in the international Egyptological world. It was only when the Museum made itself available for study and research that Egyptology reached a peak in popularity. In the 1930s, the Museum had the great good fortune to welcome such well known Egyptologists as A. T. Wilkinson, G. M. Smith and J. E. Reisner. To this day the Museum continues to attract visitors from around the world. The work of the Museum is recognised as of international importance. The Museum is one of the most important and best-equipped museums in the world.
In 1914 the Museum began to collect its own manuscript material. In this period the Curators realised the need for an international depository and in 1929 the decision was taken to go public with the collection and open it to researchers. The Griffith Institute was formally inaugurated on the 9th of September, 1930, when the Duke of York opened it with great ceremony.
