Once I get back to my friend's house, I'll check and see if she has that one program on her computer. I was thinking of doing a virus check, as well as a spyware check, and then I'd try to fix her computer. If your friend has Windows XP, there are a number of free programs that you can use to improve speed like Autorun Fixer, Speed Up Windows XP, and System Restore. If she has Vista or 7, there is a program called System Mechanic that will do the same thing. MD5 (or possibly SHA) hashing is probably not what you want to use. It will be slow, and if your friend is using an adware program that is already on the computer, it's going to be tough to get rid of it. If you use a program like AVG, you can use their Expert Mode to create a bootable disk image, which you can then put on a USB thumb drive. This will be much faster than loading the disk image from the original CD. You can also connect to the Internet to download other programs, such as anti-malware programs.
