The film premiered at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival in Germany in February 2010.[16] On September 1, 2010, it debuted in Japanese cinemas and received a theatrical release on September 19, 2010.[17] It is a co production between Kyoto Animation, Universal Japan, and Shochiku.[18][19]

Written and directed by Naoko Yamada, the film is inspired by stories from director Haruki Murakami of the same name. The novel was published in Japan in 1989, and the film recreates the events in the first half of the book with much of the cast from the television anime series brought over. The film features ten different songs and over twenty original songs, all but two written and composed by the anime's music producer Yoko Kanno. The film's theme song is by the band Can.

The animation Studio A-1 Pictures took over production of the film from Kyoto Animation, who animated the shorts "Parfum" and "Sora no Mamono."[20] The movie was aired twice during the Summer Evenings on Japanese TV, and was shown on the Animage Anime Fair in January, where it was selected as the audience's favorite.[21]

The manga Ho$hi no Manazakari is based off the character designs from the film. The first volumes of the manga will be released on 12 October 2010.[22] When a movie with this name was released as part of the 1988 Cinema-Scope Collection, it was an animation by Akira Nishiki starring Genichiro Tenryu & Takayoshi Yamada.[23] d2c66b5586
