Biodegradation of catechol by immobilized cells of Pseudomonas putida KJ (ATCC 14942) was assessed in a two-phase aqueous medium in a flow-through reactor. Pseudomonas cells were immobilized in alginate-Ca-alginate beads. Aqueous phase was composed of polypropylene tubes and the alginate beads were placed in a conical flask. The cells were successfully immobilized in a uniform alginate bead. The immobilized cells were used for a biodegradation of catechol in a two-phase system in a flow-through bioreactor. Two-phase separation in the immobilized cell bioreactor was investigated. The density of beads was 5.0-5.5 g/ml, the total volume of beads and alginate phase was 10 ml. The alginate phase was used as a second phase in the reactor. The efficiency of biodegradation of catechol with the immobilized cells was 80.7%. The immobilized cells were reused seven times without decrease of efficiency.
